Movie #36: Valentine’s Day

OK, I have to stop claiming that I don’t watch romantic comedies because obviously that’s untrue. However, I can still say that don’t like them because if there are reasons for my liking Valentine’s Day, they have nothing to do with romance. The intersecting tales of a dozen or so characters who go through romantic ups and downs over the course of a single Valentine’s Day, comprise a huge candy box of cliches. Nevertheless, what helps a bit is the solar flare (i.e. an explosion of star power, get it?) of a cast that includes Julia Roberts, Jessica Biel, Ann Hathaway, Queen Latifah, Jamie Foxx, Hector Elizondo, Shirley MacLaine, George Lopez, Taylor Swift, Taylor Lautner, and Jessica Alba to name a few. I thought it was fun also that (even though they may not have shared screen time because they were in separate story lines) this cast list also serves as a reunion for: Ashton Kutcher and Topher Grace (from That 70s Show), Jennifer Garner and Bradley Cooper (from Alias), and Patrick Dempsey and Eric Dane (Drs. McDreamy and McSteamy from Grey’s Anatomy). If you’re observant, you’ll also notice clever little nods from Shirley MacLaine and Julia Roberts to their own early careers. The funniest scenes to me were of Queen Latifah performing a little phone sex and Taylor Swift playing a sweet high school ditz. As I said, what little I enjoyed of this movie was for the wrong reasons. Unfortunately, if it weren’t for those un-romantic moments, this kaleidoscope of a million other romantic films would have been less than bearable. (3 out of 5)

36 down, 14 to go!
