Movie #4: The Men Who Stare At Goats

This did not turn out to be the movie that I thought it would be. I knew that The Men Who Stare At Goats featured George Clooney as part of a secret team of real-life psychic soldiers. However, I also knew that it was not actually the kind of sci-fi storyline that the premise suggested — rather more tongue-in-cheek. In the end it actually focused more on Ewan MacGregor’s character: a small time, small town journalist, trying to prove something by investigating the story of Clooney and his team. In doing that, he ends up following Clooney into Iraq where he learns that the team was really no more than a misguided military application of New Age ideas led by Jeff Bridges’s character, who seems like an officer channelling “The Dude”. I was disappointed by how bogus it is that by hooking up with these crazy guys, MacGregor’s character somehow comes to terms with the failures in his own life, and helps them deal with theirs as well. These kinds of preposterous circumstances probably made more sense in book form (where they could be seen more as metaphor) than as a movie that left me wondering what was the point? And it wasn’t very funny, either! (3 out of 5)
